Evening Recreation Drop-In Programs

Evening Recreation Drop-In Programs

Step It Up!

Step It Up! is a philosophy in program delivery comprised of three components: increasing physical activity levels of our members; enhancing nutritional awareness and healthy eating choices; and asset building.

Step It Up! uses three tools which are implemented throughout all school age programs:

The CATCH program is an evidence-based program designed to promote physical activity, healthy food choices and the prevention of tobacco use in children;

SNACKivity is a structured, hands-on nutritional education activity which allow participants to research and prepare healthy snacks and facilitates activities and discussions which can be implemented in daily routines;

DEVELOPMENTAL ASSETS are building blocks of healthy development which assist young people to grow into healthy, caring and responsible adults.

Torch Club - The Torch Club gets pre-teens, aged 10-13 engaged with what's happening in their community.  Torch Club members plan their own programming based on the issues important to them.  Torch Club helps kids develop leadership skills and self-esteem in a respectful, diversified environment.  The program also offers the opportunity to give back to others and gain a sense of responsibility that comes with making those decisions.

Jays Rookie League - Rookie League is a program that uses the game of baseball as a foundation to teach children the importance of team work, cooperation and self-esteem.  This safe, fun, active and engaging baseball program for children ages 5-18 years, focuses on those who might not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in recreational or organized sport.

STEAM Ahead! - Mixing visual, auditory and hands-on activities to engage different learning styles, STEAM Ahead encourages children to explore STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fundamentals and includes an artistic (A) component to encourage creativity and innovation.

Kid Food Nation - is a national food skills initiative, designed for kids aged 7-12 years.  The initiative aims to help improve Canadian's food skills and support healthy eating habits by empowering and educating kids, parents and families to develop practical knowledge and experience related to planning, preparing and cooking healthy meals and snacks.
